Photosynthesis is the process through which light energy from sunlight is converted into chemical energy for the plants. Especially in green plants, light energy is converted into carbon dioxide, minerals and water into oxygen. The colour of the leaf is green due to the presence of four pigments and not just one pigment alone. Chlorophyll a (blue green pigment), chlorophyll b (yellow green), xanthophylls (yellow) and carotenoids has yellow to yellow-orange appearing pigment.
This ability of plants to utilize sunlight energy to create food on their own food is the reason why plants are called autotrophs.

Photosynthesis, at its core, is a process that harvests energy from the sun and transforms it into food. And this process has been around for billions of years. It was theorized that the very first forms of life capable of photosynthesis were cyanobacteria. And it was these forms of life that is responsible for today’s oxygen in the atmosphere.

Over the aeons, higher plants have evolved various structures and mechanisms to adapt and thrive in various environments. Flowering plants gradually evolved and they are the most dominant species of land plants, while simpler plants like moss and algae occupy the aquatic biomes.
