NCERT Solutions Class 11 Chemistry Chapter 8 PDF
A redox reaction is a chemical reaction that includes a transfer of electrons. It is also called as the oxidation-reduction reaction. In reduction reactions, there is a gain of electrons and in oxidation reactions, there is a loss of electrons. For example:
CuSO4 (aq) + Zn(s) → ZnSO4 (aq) + Cu(s)
This is a redox reaction. In this aqueous solution of copper sulfate: Zinc (Zn) gains sulfate and copper (Cu) losses sulfate.
There are many examples of Redox Reactions related to our day to day activities. Listed below are a few of them:
- Combustion
- Respiration
- Rusting of metals.
- Photosynthesis in Plants.
- Using washing powder to remove the dirt from clothes.
- Raw materials used in cooking getting converted into edible forms.
The name Redox contains two parts: “Reduction and oxidation”. Will now learn what are these two reactions and also about redox reaction.
Oxidation and reduction can be explained in different terms.
In terms of oxygen transfer
- Oxidation reaction: The reaction in which there is an addition of oxygen to an element is called oxidation reaction.
- Reduction reaction: The reaction in which there is a loss of oxygen from an element is called reduction reaction.
- Redox Reaction: “The reaction in which both reduction and oxidation takes place at the simultaneously is called redox reaction.”
Given below is an example of redox reaction
In terms of hydrogen transfer
- Oxidation reaction: The reaction in which there is an addition of hydrogen to an element is called oxidation reaction.
- Reduction reaction: The reaction in which there is a loss of oxygen from an element is called reduction reaction.
The point to be noted here is these are exactly opposite of oxygen transfer definition.
Example: Here Ethanol is oxidised to Ethanal.
Example: Here Ethanal is reduced to Ethanol.
In terms of electron transfer
The electron transfer is the most common way of explaining the redox reaction concept.
- Oxidation: The reaction in which there is loss of electrons is called oxidation reaction.
It can be easily memorised as
LEO= Loss of Electrons Oxidation
- Reduction: The reaction in which there is gain of electrons is called reduction reaction.
It can be easily memorised as
GER= Gain of Electrons Reduction
Hence, GER and LEO are the vital parts of redox reaction.
Example: Will consider an ionic equation for better understanding
In the above reaction, Magnesium loses its two electrons and stabilises copper as copper gains two electrons from magnesium.
Applications:
Redox Reaction can be seen in daily life. Examples
- Rusting of iron or corrosion
- Spoilage of food articles
These can be avoided by painting or oiling the iron articles. By keeping the food in air tight containers or in a cold storage.
