Summary of the chapter The Treasure Within 

The treasure within is a story about the conversation between India’s one of leading architects Mr Hafeez Contractor and Ms Bela Raja, editor of Sparsh. Mr Hafeez begins by confessing about his schooldays and nightmares. He was unhappy at school and used to get terrible dreams about appearing for a math exam in which he did not know anything at all. But he stopped seeing those nightmares five years ago that was quite positive. 

When Ms Bela asked about his earliest memories, he said that he was good at studying up to Secon standard. Later he lost interest in studying and got indulged in games. He used to copy in his examinations, but one day his principal approached, and his words influenced Hafeez. That particular year, he did not step into the field also, though he was a cricket team captain. He just eats, prays and studies. Finally, he got 50% in his exam and earned the principal’s appreciations. 

When Bela asked him how did he become an architect, he unfolds a story. He wanted to join the army, but his aunt tore up the admission letter. Then he decided to join the police force, but his mom asked him to complete his graduation. He joined the Jai Hind college in Bombay and took German out of the two options, but his German teacher died soon. Then he took French, and his cousin sister, an architect’s wife, taught him French in the architect’s office.  One day he noticed that someone was drawing the wrong window details, and when he pointed at it, the architect was amazed and asked him to draw some other designs and advised him to become an architect. 

The college gave admission only for students with 80-85%, but Hafeez had only 50%. The architect went with Hafeez and requested the principal to allow him for the entrance. Finally, he got an A-plus in the entrance exam.  He owes his talent to all other activities he did in his school. One of his teachers advised that he would become an architect by looking at the sketches he did in his school. He thinks that living school life in a way made him path smart. Ms Bela felt that it was possible because the personality was there, and he found expression in his comfort. Now he would sketch spontaneously on the spot. It is all possible because of the mathematics that subject which he disliked.

Each individual has talents, which may or may not be visible in the academic report. That is why students should be encouraged to showcase their skills and work on them. They should not be called failures.
