Summary of the chapter Kathmandu

In this chapter the writer, Vikram Seth recalls his memories of a visit to Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. He describes two temples he visited there.  The Hindu temple Pashupatinath and the Boudhanath Stupa of the Buddhists. Vikram Seth with his companions visits the Pashupatinath temple where only Hindus are allowed to enter, he finds many activities going on inside and around the temple. A group of westerners struggle to get permission to enter the temple but the policeman near the gate was not allowed to enter. People jostle with each other, the royal princess appears inside the temple, two monkeys are fighting each other, priests, pigeons, devotees, hawkers, dogs and tourists get together in the temple. He sees a cremation takes place on the bank of the river Bagmati. Some women were washing clothes and the children taking baths in it and the river was being polluted as wilted flowers and old offerings were thrown into it.

Vikram Seth finds peace, quietness and serenity at the Boudha Stupa in contrast to the noisy activity at the Hindu temple. There are no crowds in the stupas, though there are shops of Tibetian migrants around the stupa. Apart from the two temples, there are a number of small temples in the busy streets. Kathmandu is a crowded city. He roams around the market aimlessly then he decides to return home and he booked an airline ticket for Delhi. Then he returns to his hotel and finds a flute seller in the corner of the hotel. He plays the flute from time to time. The author liked it and it was very difficult to move because the flute music attracts him. The flute is found in almost all cultures and it is a common musical organ that reminds him of the common link between all humanity.
